Toronto Craigslist Scavenger

When we renovated the house, we stole the closet from the guest room to make a walk in closet in the master...now I'm in the market for an armoire for the guest bedroom.  My only source will be Craigslist.

Here's the room:

We have a new white duvet cover, but I don't want to put it on the bed until we are done renovating and rearranging.  The bed frame, end tables and skinny mini lamps are from our old condo. Yes I know, we could definitely use some bigger lamps. The chandie was in the dining room when we bought the house, it used to be brass - I sprayed it out.  The armoire will sit in the corner across from the bed, tucked against the wall with the window.

The criteria: prefer vintage over modern//solid wood, not veneer (well made)//rod at top with drawers at bottom (preferable)

and ...here are my options:

1 - Armoire/Wardrobe/Entertainment unit - $800 (Leslieville) - simple, $$$, matchy matchy

3- Wardrobe For Sale - $100 (Derry & Bellshire) - Not the right wood tone, but the right price! Could I paint that brass bit? Plus new handles? do I want to take on another project right now? Is it REALLY solid wood?

4- bedroom set ( solid wood) - $480 (Unionville) - don't want the full set, would they break it up? Not the right wood tone either...
5- Teak Armoire, mid century - $850 (Queen West) - $$$, gorgeous, will it be too orangey? and is that checkerboard veneer at the bottom?

6- 3 bedroom sets - $300 (thornhill) - need to break up the set...also need to paint it...I think it wants to be sky blue; There is also the possibility of just the dresser, for the study...(to hold etsy goods)
7- Armoire - $450 (Downtown Toronto) - this is a potential winner, but is it vintage? does it have drawers or shelves? Is it solid wood? What are the dimensions? So many questions...

8- Antique Wardrobe - Hand Carved Art Deco - $350 (Danforth / Jones) - not sure about the colour, or that carved detail...or the handle...I do like how its tiered...

Which one would you choose?

  1. Number 4. Even if you don't need the whole set, I think that you can use your magic touch and wonderful imagination to use the rest of the set elsewhere in the house.

  4. 1, 2, and 7, are my favorites. 2 is my favorite for the details on it, 7 is next for it's vintagey clean lines, and 1 for being 'matchy-matchy' if that's the look you wanna go for.

  6. I like 7 if it is vintage, or #6 ... beause you get 2 pieces for a great price and can paint it out.

PS. I'm so glad you left a comment on my blog, I will be back, I love finding Toronto fellow bloggers!

  7. I like #2 but I can see how your hubby would think it too roco-poco for the space. #7 looks like a winner to me.

  8. Thanks for all your input!!!!!! I really like #7 and #2...I don't feel like investing time into painting the other guys (although they would rock)

#7 never returned my email...I have my fingers crossed that it is still available...and #2, in all its 'roco-poco' glory, is waiting for me...if only I could convince my DH.

I may just wait and see what else comes up...Oh and we are going to check out the HorseFeathers liquidation sale in case there are some deals & steals!

  11. Went to see #7 today (finally)...it was completely different than what I expected...it was reddish wood, very new and shiny...no patina..and veneer doors...had an asian feel...wouldn't work in the space...glad we went to see it!
