Can't quite get the shot

Here is the office again...I added a small plant on the malms ... a couple photos to the bulletin board...

I am trying to capture the room with my camera...but can't quite get the shot...
I squatted low - desk height (in my skinny jeans too)...bumped up the exposures...turned the chair a bit to see it in profile...still...its not doing it for me...IS IT THE PHOTO (the photographer, I should say, can't really blame the camera, the super bright windows and super dark floors are almost always going to defeat me) OR IS IT THE ROOM?

Emma, you have me all paranoid that I don't have a style...

ps...we tried the dash + albert rug in here, but it ASSAULTED MY OPTIC NERVE...I couldn't handle the pattern because there is already a lot of busy-ness in the room...much much better in the master bedroom

  1. I have to say, I love your office. With two kids of my own I envy your own space. And I agree on the rug; too much.
Thanks for letting me peek in on your office :)

  3. Hi Shadi!
We had the original oak floors refinished before we moved in (ripped up the carpeting)...our contractor took care of it...and we had new quarter sawn oak boards installed in the kitchen and finished at the same time as the rest of the house...i should mention that we are unhappy with the way the kitchen floors split in the winter...even with humidifier on...the boards are also wider than the original flooring...

  5. Don't blame me - blame Michelle! She's the one that got me all freaked out. Oh well, a little design self reflection never did anyone any harm. (My husband is worried about his wallet though...wondering what the next round of "ideas" will cost him/us)
I think your office looks great...you know if they were to shoot it for a magazine they would probably use a wide angle lens which would capture the whole room better. It's hard to get shots of small rooms without one.

  7. I think it's a compositional problem in both the room and from a photographic standpoint. Play around with the way the photos on the bulletin board are placed. You could break up the clump of photos on the bulletin board and arrange them so that three are close to the top right side of the board and one on the bottom left to help create tension. Think of the bulletin board as a canvas that needs to be composed within the composition of your photographic frame.

To control the composition as a photographer, you would want to remove the corner of the white table jutting into the side of the photo because it's visually disruptive. However, that would require you to move the white table, which is a lot of hassle just to get "the shot".

    Hope that helps!

  8. Hey Emma...I 99.9% love portrait view images, for whatever reason...I never thought to take out the wide lens for in here!

Hey Kristine...the bulletin board is in progress....it will slowly fill up organically...but you are 100% right about the desk jutting out, I bet I could have done a 20 degree turn and it would have disappeared from the image, you know? The photo of the desk is the one that really gets to me...ok, time to practice some more! I will upload a few more tries...
