We stopped into the Value Village near the Walmart Supercenter on Eglinton so I could poke around...everything seemed over-priced...I still came home with a couple things...but I left two milk glass candlestick holders on the shelf ($4.99 each)...a bunch of silver this and thats...and even abandoned an abused pyrex bowl at the cash (large scuffed up yellow mixing bowl - $6.99) This is what I came home with:
Two hammered aluminum trays (one is a basket), a small stack of plates, and a small stack of bowls...the plates and bowls aren't of the same set, but I love how they look together!!!
I have to agree value village is very pricey!! I just hit up some thrift stores yesterday including the 2 Salvation army locations one on Eglinton and Warden, the other on Kennedy and I got some great stuff for my sister's room!! I just posted the pics on my blog go check it out and let me know what you think?
ReplyDeleteThe plates look fantastic together. You have built such a great collection of housewares...jealous sigh...We just moved in recently and I can't wait to hit the thrift stores and find some treasures.
ReplyDeleteI thought I was the only one who thought they were pricey. I find Goodwill or Salvation are cheaper. I agree with ML on the plates.
ReplyDeleteMy mom had a whole set in the pattern of those bowls. I always thought that pattern was elegant, even as a child in the '70s.
ReplyDeleteI have also found that Value Village has really increased their prices. Anything with a brand name label such as Talbots is quite over priced even if it is in poor condition!
ReplyDeleteI was at Value Village yesterday and found some used Dollarama items priced at 3.99 - seriously! How crazy is that!

ML - I still don't have enough pieces to make a really great mix n' match vintage table setting for eight (or more, obviously)...so I will continue to acquire!
ReplyDeletesafaffect - I love your mom!
I found a large pyrex at GW - in much better condition than the one at VV - and $1 cheaper...sweet!
So true! I find Goodwill to be decently priced especially on half price days. Value Village is absolutely ridiculous! Cheap Stitches or Urban Behaviour jeans that cost $10 retail are usually marked $15-20 there. Salvation Army has the best prices but their stores are usually smaller and selection not as good.
ReplyDeleteOn that note, Half Price Friday today at Bloor & Sherbourne goodwill! Saw some beautiful brass plate candle holders and cups yesterday. :)
Yeah, Value Village is quite pricey. Sometimes you get lucky, but not often enough. I don't mind paying some of their prices for some items, as you aren't going to find them anywhere else besides eBay & with the added shipping costs, would cost more.
ReplyDeleteI've seen them charge insane prices for the most beat up, ugly pieces of Pyrex you could imagine. I can't even wonder who buys that crap.
Wish there were more Goodwill & Sally Annes around so people could donate their stuff there instead! For profit thrift stores = BOO.
Just noticed a couple of weeks ago that the Value Village in Coquitlam, BC, Canada is pricing IKEA items at the same or higher than the in store and online IKEA prices. E,G, set of six glasses sells for $10.99 at IKEA and were priced at $2.99 each at Value Village (6=$17.94)....WTF?
ReplyDeleteI agree. I was just there and saw so many WalMart brands at almost the price WalMart sells them new! And as one other poster mentioned, I saw some Dollar Store items with the $1 price still attached for $2.99 and $3.99. I still buy a few things there - some toys and children`s books mostly, but I find most items grossly overpriced for the condition. I just donated my most recent bag of clothes and housewares to the Salvation Army. They are a registered charity. Yay!
