ReplyDeleteI'm having trouble finding great books lately - books that I just can't put down. I read We Need To Talk About Kevin - gripping, but I can't say I loved it. Tried Hunger Games 'cause everyone told me to read it - so, so! Reading The Game now - way too much hockey for me. So where do i go from here? Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteHave you read anything by Penny Vincenzi? Fun, take-me-away reading. A bit heavier, but really good: Keith Richard's "Life"....really interesting, even if you're not a fan.

Before I Go to Sleep is a good one to start with - it's kind of a mystery and has some suspense and that is fun - you'll get through it fast!
ReplyDeleteI also liked A Great and Terrible Beauty (I read it a long time ago and didn't realize at the time that it was a teen book.) She's written a bunch of other ones too.

Have you read any John Irving? They are weird but wonderful - A Prayer for Owen Meany, Cider House Rules, A Widow for one Year - forget the bad movies and read the books!
Oh and the Josephine Bonaparte trilogy is amazing - historical fiction before historical fiction went viral (and really badly written - like authors took their "facts" from Wikipedia). They are by Sandra Gulland. Her other books don't live up to the trilogy!
I could go on but I'll leave it at that! :)
Don't give yourself tooo hard a time - you are super busy!! I am reading Sisters Brothers and it is really good. I also just read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and LOVED it. Plus I knocked off the Hunger Games Trilogy pretty quick - they are light, although violent, and interesting!

ReplyDeleteFor reading: definitely 'The Flying Troutmans' by Miriam Toews. For strategy: start counting the number of books you read to the boy(s) towards your 50-book total and I bet you're already there!

ReplyDelete"A Prayer for Owen Meany" is one of my all time favorites. Most people hate the beginning but stay with it...once you are hooked you won't put it down.
omg, since getting a car I don't read anywhere NEAR as much as I used to. My subway ride home was prime reading time for me.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite fiction authors are Lisa Jewell and Nick Hornby. A Long Way Down by Nick Horby is HILARIOUS and one my favourite books ever. Although the only fiction book I've read in the last year is The Help. Other than that I've only read non-fiction. I really enjoyed Tipping Point and Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell... fascinating stuff!

ReplyDeleteWow, that's a lot of reading. I read 22 books (just checked it out on my Kindle yesterday). I also read 3 magazine subscriptions - does that count? I found reading has gone back up since the kids sleep through the night.
ReplyDeleteOh, just finished Beach Music by Pat Conroy - oldy, but a goody. And have you read The Perfume? Old, but my favourite book, read it about 6 times. And I highly recommend Island under the Sea by Isabel Allende.

ReplyDeleteI read Girl in Translation last summer, and loved it. It's a quick read, but a very touching story.
ReplyDeleteEven if you have seen the movie "The Notebook" by Nicholas Sparks is so worth it...but have tissues ready...very different than the movie. Also Eckhart Tolle's "The Power of Now" or "A New Earth"...life changing!!!!

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is one of my very favourites! The Night Circus was a good recent read. Life of Pi is great. Ragged Company was a surprisingly great read too!
