Salvation Army Art

This morning, I scooped up an enlarged mounted photo - $9.99 from salvation army. It was love at first sight! I found the perfect place for it in the upstairs hallway.

The sign on the back says Rosemary Goldhar Photography.

Hallway light

This is the light at the top of our stairs, we call it the concoction. We have the dimmest of bulbs in it - letting its popcorn glass cast a glow on the ceiling.

We bought the light at the outdoor market in Nice, France1.  It was love at first sight!  I bargained hard (in english to the vendor's french) and received a healthy discount from the opening offer. Still, I am certain we paid way too much.  Oh well, I didn't want to walk away and I am sure it was written on my face!

When we got home we took it to Tony at Residential Lighting for rewiring, and the first thing he said was "it's a concoction"....I had no idea what he was talking about. How can a light be a concoction? Turns out that the base plate and the upper plate are from a very very old chandelier, but the globe is from a more recent (mid century-ish) lamp.  Some crazy french bird slapped the two together in order to sell this 'globe pendant' to a tourist. At first my heart sank...I thought it might have been valuable (don't we always think something is valuable when we know we are spending to much??).

Well, the new spin is: "one-of-a-kind, up cycled"

Let me tell you: I love this light.  LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I love that every time I look at it, I think of that day in Nice. What's not to love - its G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S!!!!

1. We carried it home in our carry-on.  Not easy. Plus it started something. I am now willing to buy just about any crazy thing while on vacation and figure out how to get it home later.
