New Basement Furniture?

Here is our basement today

We are looking at buying an alphaville downlow chair and ottoman to place where the measuring tapes are.  Since we would be ordering the downlow chair online from the states, it is incredibly inconvenient to return. So I am just checking to see what you think. IS IT TOO BIG?  Good, or bad, or very bad? TOO much furniture?

Should we get the downlow ottoman too or just the chair?  (Chair is facing 8foot movie screen, the focal point of the room, but I didn't snap a photo - oops!) I also want a coffee table, maybe, but I can get that after I see how much room we are dealing with.

Selling the KIVIK and buying a full togo (downlow) sectional?  Not sure that is an option!  Maybe?

Note: I moved the toy area (back) and shrunk it.  I like having more of the stained concrete floors uncovered.  Not to mention the toys ended up over here anyways.

  1. I kind of love it, but it's always hard to tell until it's in the space.

  2. Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am sooo close to calling in a designer to help!

  3. Something to consider: Would the seat height difference b/w sectional and togo/downlow look weird next to each other? If you can afford it, I'd vote for downlow sectional!

  4. The look incredibly comfy and cool- did you check out any online reviews? When in doubt I research reviews.. PS jealous you have such a big basement! Living in NYC I have NO ROOM : )

  5. I'd go for sectional and chair to keep the same kind of style (or in this case groove ;)) I think it would look great, comfy for everyone including the kids. I'd only do a coffee table if you can find something low..I'm not fond of the proportionss in the last photo.
Have you tried to find vintage in TO? Or borrowing from someone to check scale?

  6. I love your basement and the floor, first off. I like mixing it up, so I would keep your couch and get the chair without ottoman. It will look great whatever you decide to do.

  7. I'd just get the chair (no ottoman)... but I love the look of the full sectional. So fun! What color are you getting?

ModFruGal and I are sooo on the same wavelength. I would be concerned about seat height as well. If the budget works, I'd go for the sectional!

PS - love, Love, LOVE the Togo line ....

  9. I think I'd pass on the chair and ottoman. Seems like the style is different than what else is going on the basement. Make the big commitment with the Togo sectional and sell the KIVIK.

  10. Shannon ... as soon as I saw the measuring tapes I knew you were thinking of adding a chair .... funny how measuring tapes = chair!!

personally the chair is too low for me ... but sure looks comfy.

  11. for the right impact I think you need to go all the way. I think just the chair itself may look off and leave you wanting more.

  12. i thought about this too...the height of the downlow is 28", the sofa back is 26" and the sofa cushion 30" - BUT, I wonder about the seat height?

  14. I read their return policy, looks like even though they have free shipping, if you had to return it you would be paying shipping both directions..plus stocking fees, also duty I assume. To me, even though the furniture is very unique, I wouldn't want to risk having to return it and pay all those charges. I imagine you have already tried to find a Canadian supplier?

    1. go all out or go home :) so I would get the sectional to replace what you have there right now.
    2. are you SURE??? It is a very unique look. Call in a designer :) really and truly.
    3. and I wouldn't get the ottoman.

so exciting :) this is something I would never consider getting, so I"m absolutely stoked about expanding my comfort zone vicariously through you!

  16. Hi Shannon,
i agree with the others who say go big or go home. Not only do I think the height difference will look weird, (look how low it looks in the child's room) but I think the kivik will end up looking totally shabby next to the down low (not that it is, but you know what I mean). Personally I like the top picture best, two seats and one couch, but I understand the appeal of a sectional. That top picture is really like your space (sans windows of course) so I think it will look awesome.

  17. Do you have any issues with getting furniture down the stairs into your basement? I've had to really compromise on furniture choices because of my narrow stairs. :(

I love the sectional - I'd go for the whole thing.

  18. my vote is for the whole sectional. and you have a lot of white space in the basement, so you could pick a really fun color! (the lime green is fun) my practical self has to say, make sure its easily cleanable since you have kiddos (unless you are good about setting rules for furniture)

Shannon, I wonder if you ever got around to making a decision on the Togo/Fogo? I haven't seen you mention it again on the blog and wonder if you're secretly still craving it :) I'm in the process of choosing a sofa "to save up for" and this one is my top choice. Just thought I'd ask.

I would love to live in TO, just for the clist. Ottawa is pitiful in comparison. Fingers crossed for you guys :)
