Living room bookshelves

I kept them to myself for a few weeks...that's how much I love my new living room bookshelves!

...

Last night, we went to see Chung King Express, at the TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) cinemas.  The film was introduced by the quite possibly drunk cinematographer, Christopher Doyle.  Doyle also took questions after the flick.

This was the first time I watched this movie.  I was confused (WTF is going on?), I was touched (It's been a long time since I had my heart broken), I was wow'd (the film itself is beautiful and gritty)...

Doyle was not always coherent, it seemed like he couldn't hold his thoughts together...but his (quite possibly) drunken ramblings filled me up! I want to run out and create something...I want to put MY truth out there...put my Toronto out there.

It has been a long time since I walked away from something feeling creatively full. It made me realized how drained I have been over the last little while.

Now I ask myself, what am I going to do about it?

ps. I really hope you like the shelves. I feel like the room is still balanced. I don't know how it seems balanced with so much happening...maybe because we have a enormous fire place, lots of french doors, and a bunch of windows.  I don't know! Maybe you can tell me ?!?!?!
pps. The top shelf will stay empty until, overtime, my books completely fill the main shelves...the top gives me room to age, read, and collect!

the shelves look gorgeous (and absolutely balanced!). It is hard to be, and especially to stay, creative. Hope you find what you're looking for :)

  2. the bookshelves looks perfect! definitely balanced, and add so much life to your room! and I love that your books aren't color coordinated (kinda over that trend). the jumble of sizes and colors are perfect!

  4. They look great! I'm jealous! One of my favourite parts of my bedroom growing up was always my bookshelf (not nearly as beautiful as this)!

  7. Those shelves are seriously beautiful (and I'm super jealous of your ability to keep them uncluttered). Also, that rug? So much love.

  8. On feeling creatively full: I try to remind myself that it is the process of creating and not just the finished product that has value and importance to one's satisfaction and wellbeing.....Sometimes the process will feel ridiculously insignificant but that's ok.
Book shelves look really nice, your home looks well-lived.

  9. It's like art! Also - do your kids go in this room? I was always wondering how you keep things on the coffee table!

  10. We go into the living room a few times a week...We spend most of our time in the kitchen, on the deck, or in the basement when it rains...

The kids are used to the stuff - it isn't exciting to them any more. They ignore it. Sometimes my little one puts hotwheels in the center of the books...and a book or two has been knocked off. Other times we move the chairs and leave legos in the living room for a few days...

Other kids gravitate to the four wooden leaf bowls on top of the books - and I find the bowls all over the house after a visit...that's why I took away the brass do-dads...wooden bowls are indestructible and do not turn into a weapon! Ha!

  11. Makes sense! We have lots of wine glasses in arm's reach and my son has never touched those but other kids flock to them. I've never put anything on the coffee table though! I should start with small things to see what gets noticed.

  12. I wouldn't start small! I would just go for it...and be ready to put things back 100 times a day for the first little while...store up your patience!

    little hands like little things!

  13. I love them - your living room and the shelves are gorgeous! I would love more information on the shelves - how you did them/where you got them - they look like built-ins!

  14. Chungking Express is one of my all-time favourite movies – the story, the cinematography, colours, etc. The second half of the movie inspired Amelie (another fave of mine). Wong Kar Wai is a great director, if you haven't seen In the Mood for Love before, you should try renting that next. It's subtle and stunning.

    P.S. The bookshelves look great.

  15. Oh I love the book shelves. It was a gutsy move for the living room but they turn out great! Hubby is a big fan of Wong Kar-wai's movies and Chungking Express was the first movie ever we watched together. I always made fun of Anthony by collecting cliches from WKW's movies. Tell me if you are sold on the "If my love for you has an expiry date, let it be ten thousand years." Ha ha.

I really, really love them too!! We need some huge book shelves in the new house. Maybe we'll have to fly my Dad to come out and give B some help with his "honey do" list! ;)
