Trying to Style up the Kitchen Shelves

Here is a wide view of my kitchen, looking at the desk.  This is a problem spot for me.  I simply can not get the desk to behave.
Here is the problem my brain refuses to get past. When we reno'd the house, I suggested some open shelves at the end of our cabinets.  I assumed they would go right across the wall to the window.  However, the cabinet maker wasn't able to make free floating shelves in that length, so they changed the plans. Now I have three stubby shelves that are 1' deep and 2' across.

I can't figure out what to do with them!

They look decent with piles of books (what shelf doesn't?) but we are afraid that they can't handle the weight.  The only thing worse that stubby shelves is stubby warped shelves.

I attempted to fill up the wall with art (as if the shelves aren't really there?) but I don't have enough yet.

Anyways this is what I have come up with - for now...

I think maybe we should take them down, and put a large piece of art up in its place? What do you think? (Big ass computer has to stay...*sigh*)

  1. First of all, gorgeous kitchen!!! But Booo about the shelves potentially not handling weight and being stubby. Personally, if it's not functioning, I'd get rid of them and maybe add a bulletin board wrapped in Linen so it doesnt stand out or, as you mentioned, art. Still drooling over your oven. *sigh*

  2. I would maybe remove the top shelf, lean a few pieces of art on the second shelf, and leave the bottom shelf.

  3. I discovered your blog yesterday and have been reading the achieves ever since. Love everything you're doing :) Wanted to comment on your kitchen table and how great it looks. I'm decorating around four bertoia chairs and though I love your glass table I've been hesitant to get it, as I think it would be too much chrome... Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for inspiring me to go back to kijiji/craigslist. Ottawa listings are not as exciting as TO, but we do OK :)
