Score!

I found a wardrobe for the guest room!  I LOVE IT!  Those circles...ohhhh my.....

I was originally thinking about painting it...so I had the delivery guys put it into the garage...HOWEVER, I am kinda into the wood!

What do you think? Should I paint it white? Or go with it?  The wood is in AMAZING condition...

...its kinda old smelling...just sayin'!
and its super heavy...it is actually two separate pieces...not sure what to make of that...they aren't even bolted together, and the bottom set of two drawers has a finished top...

  1. I love it- great find-Craigslist? The wood is so nice the way it is, however it is smelly, a good coat of paint will get rid of that!!

  2. Very cool and different from anything I have seen before.
I say try it as wood (if you can get rid of the smell) first. Then if it doesn't work you can paint it without any qualms.

  4. Hi Shannon,

Lovely find, the detail is very unusual please don't paint it. My husband makes furniture & he suggested you clean it with linseed oil or tung oil, try a spot inside to see what conditions the wood better. You could try cleaning the inside with a mild bleach solution or I think you can buy charcoal briquettes to remove the smell. Google some ideas before resorting to the paint can.

  7. UM WOW! I love it!
I'm so into painting it, but agree with Janice - I think if you could keep it natural it would be great. You may just have to get something for cleaning wood surfaces and use some good ol' elbow grease to get rid of the stink. Great find (as usual... haha)

  8. Hi! I just found your blog from Simply Grove and your house is BANANAS. I am d-y-i-n-g over that wardrobe, and typically I would agree with those who said you should paint it, but I actually love the wood. I wonder if you could just do a clear matte polyeurethane over the whole thing to get rid of the smell, or leave the outside as wood but paint the interior in a really bold color....

Anyhoozle - glad I found your blog, and I can't wait to spend some time browsing through it.

    Merci,
    Shannan

  9. The wood grain makes those circles pop! While it would look great painted I'd try removing the smell first and using for a bit unpainted just to see if that's how you want it to stay

  10. I would think about painting the body white and leaving the doors (and maybe the drawers, for balance?) in wood. Sort of the reverse of this side table project: http://aubreyandlindsay.blogspot.com/2009/09/side-table-project.html

  13. next time odor is a problem, fine sand it every surface. give it a second coat of shellac, then sand again, very lightly. IF (and only IF) it's working about the odor, then a third coat, sand with a finer paper.

at this point, i'd wax it with some hard wax/polish like johnson paste wax or fiddes & sons supreme. several times. double your price.

  14. ...i'd wax it... OR use whatever you like, know or love -- poly, varnish, lacquer some water based concoction
