Office puttering part two - simplify desk

The big change in the office was discarding the 'right wing' of the desk.  We found that it didn't DO anything...

BEFORE:
AFTER:
Now that the desk is no longer pressed against the giant leather chair, the room feels ALOT larger...although we are still missing that  "IT" factor...maybe this is good enough...

OR...What if I substituted a glass table with chrome legs for the desk?  Do you think that a glass table will work? Or will a glass table tucked into the corner be all wrong???

OR...Maybe I should just get new legs from ikea (these, or these or one of these?), slap them on the white desk, and call it a day?

OR...a chunky vintage desk - with drawers..and beat up wood? (sourced from Clist?)

OR...?

ps ...I wish I could identify what was wrong with room and what furniture would correct it!
pss...the two stacks of books beside the desk chair need to go to the basement...they are distracting...

UPDATE:  The stacks of books have been removed!
The desk does look tiny in the before/after photos...but its a large table and a large chair...I think the wide zoom lens is toying with us...so here is a new picture, taken with a normal lens

  1. I like the room a lot, it looks so functional, but the chair and books stop it from looking stark. I think the Runtorp legs (the ones with the casters) would add oomph to the desk.

What is that paint colour? I love it!

  2. I think the room is lovely. I think the first set of legs would work well. Have you considered a rug? I think it always looks worse to your own eyes than to others!!

  3. I think the scale of the desk looks miniscule in comparison to the rest of the furniture in the room, it's being dwarfed by everything else. I'm not sure about the corner placement, but the other pieces you have sort of limit the options.

Also, I think that there is a lot of visual clutter. Maybe try to find some storage to hide the stacks on the floor and other stuff?

  4. Thx guys! The entire house is painted the same colour...para paint silver fox (an older colour)

I tried a rug but it overwhelmed me...it must have been too busy and the wrong shape...

I removed some clutter (the stacks of books were dreadful...they are gone...and my son's toys found their way back to his room...)

and I took another photo with the regular lens because the wide zoom was making the desk look tinier than it actually is...

  5. There are a lot of great things going on in this space:
    -great big windows
    -beautiful desk & side chairs
    -gorgeous wall colour

    I would consider:
    -a rug
-centering the desk on one of the windows

p.s. My office is quite similar...Right now I feel like I have too many books for the place to stay "open and airy".

  6. losing the books makes a buge difference! I think the books on the shelves kind of overwhelm things a bit but I know you're a big reader so I don't know the fix to that quandry...
I love antique desks but it might look too heavy in the room. The table helps keep it light. Those windows are great!

  8. Puttering around is fun, isn't it? Here are my thoughts on your lovely office. I'd try centering the desk with the window. Stick a floor lamp or a plant in that corner once it's opened. Add a small side table and put the table lamp on it for the lovely, leather chair in the corner. Let me know how that goes.

I'm jealous of all the light pouring into your office. So sweet. And I love being surrounded by books, too, along with all the thrifty things.
