What would you do with the space behind our garage

The stretch of yard behind the pea gravel patio is the only area of grass left on the property, and the task of making it look good falls on our shoulders. (We probably could have paid to have it fixed up, but I think we can handle it!!!)
The landscapers spread top soil along the patio banding, and we planted grass seed today (please please grow!).  We lent our lawn mower out temporarily, so I couldn't mow what little is there...
Here's the challenge (our dirty little secret): the area behind the garage is a barren muddy wasteland*.  I am desperate to make this space work for us. It was most recently used as a dumping ground for the landscapers.  Today we separated the rest of the debris from the soil and rocks, and spread the mud around.  I raked the largest, ugliest clumps of clay up against the fence.
I think it could be a cool place to build a wooden play house or elevated tree fort (elevated, meaning two feet off the ground or less).  A sandbox might work, if it had a cover that could be locked down. Other than that, I don't have any bright ideas. Please tell me, what would you do?

*We tried growing grass last year....it sprouts up, and then promptly withers and dies. I am not sure if it needs more water, sun, or better soil.

  1. Play house, tree fort and sandbox are all great ideas. I guess it depends on which one you can get the most use out of. We recently added a storage shed to stow away all seasonal appliances and equipments. You'd surprise how much room you could free up from garage and basement.

  2. I think a playhouse, that could double for a studio, projects, etc would be amazing!

  4. Anthoer crazy idea I just thought of as I came out of shower is to add an outdoor sauna hut if you like spa. You can get both steam and infrared dry heat in one room these days. Just my two cents from a spa lover. :-)

  5. When they are little, sandboxes are so fun...mine loved theirs until they got to be about 5. A deep shade garden might be fun (ferns etc..)too...

  6. I am all about the trampoline! Our 2 year old LOVES it as does my 33 year old husband and my 35 year old self. I'm safety sue, so we paid extra for this very safe design http://www.springfreetrampoline.com/ I was skeptical about it's value, but we're out there jumping every day and I couldn't be happier. Bonus - There is no maintenance! I have no doubt we'll get at least 15 years of use and fun exercise out of it.

  7. Hi Sarah! Good idea! We bought a bouncy house that gets put up and taken down when not in use...we actually haven't got to use it yet because of the mess back there (oh and the power line to garage was accidentally cut)....maybe a trampoline will be the next big thing!

My mind keeps wandering toward a playhouse. I really want to design something...

  9. I would do a playhouse too, there are so many neat designs. I think kids love their own space too!
I second the fern planting or if you like hostas (so many interesting kinds) either of those I believe would grow really well in that location (shady).

  10. We just got a spa two months ago and I have to say we love it! I don't have kids but my nieces and nephews are always over and they too love it. You seem to have enough space for both a spa and a playhouse (or a trampoline) so you could have both.
Grass- it's a pain! Growing it from seeds is very difficult (my neighbor has been seeding for 5 long years and it still hasn't filled out. The grass that grows is always very thin and therefore prone to weeds.) Scots lawn seeds tend to grow thicker grass but it's more expensive.
My suggestion is to lay sod- much faster and easier.
    Sorry for the rambling!
