New kitchen rug

We picked up the Harper Multi Floor Runner from Crate&Barrel over the weekend.  I spotted this rug in Canadian House & Home, Before/After Magazine; ordered and paid for it sight unseen.  That's how much I loved it! (Click here to see old rug)

  1. Love the rug! It's so cozy and a nice hit of colour! What colour of Cinderella bowls are you looking for and how much do you want to pay? I'll keep an eye out for you on my antique travels!

and $40 is not unreasonable (its a bit crazy compared to the $3-7 you pay at thrift stores, but I can't get around as easily as I used to!)

Of course I love them ALL!

Maybe we need to check out Christie's this weekend!

  10. OMG... I ADORE your kitchen! It is so bright and fabulous! I've been dying to start a pyrex collection of my own... I might have to steal your idea displaying it on the open shelves. Love that!

  12. Thanks J!
not IKEA! The doors are actually VERY LARGE...custom size...the kitchen was designed by Ho K. Sung, a friend and a very talented architect!

this kitchen is three years old already! Holy smokers!

the orange pyrex was my first set, it initiated my obsession...$20 from an estate sale

  14. we had a hard time deciding if we should splurge on the wolf...it was not a light decision around here...especially since only one of us is a half decent cook (that's not me)

  15. GO for it! I think its one of the happiest collections when you have a bunch of patterns mixed together!

I have a bunch of pyrex in the basement that is waiting for a special place - maybe in our next kitchen!

  16. Love it! It looks great. What kind of countertops do you have? And do you like the darkness of them or are they annoying to clean? We currently have white countertops...but are going to (hopefully) paint our oak cabinets a shade of white, so we'll change the countertops to something else in the future...

  17. Thx Heather!
Our counters are slate. The are super unfussy and easy to clean. We love them. Low Low LOW maintenance!

White cabinets on the other hand - big pain in the butt

  18. I LOVE the rug! I've never been a rug-in-the-kitchen kind of person and then our old bathmat ended up in front of the sink when it was too big for our bathroom. It's old and grungy, but I love the feel of it under my feet when I'm cleaning up. Perhaps something like this would be a good alternative!

Love your whole kitchen. My mom has the blue and tan pyrex bowls -- very well used!

I was afraid you were going to say that. I'm trying to get my parents to redo their kitchen and I sent them this link. Hope I didn't offend. The whole kitchen is ab fab!

  21. Hi Shannon,
I have been meaning to ask you about your countertops too, are yours honed slate or did you just oil them? I have slate as well (unhoned) and we were told we could oil them, but I have been reluctant to for almost two years because I'm worried it will be a bit of a sticky mess? As it stands, I have a love/hate relationship with them because they are kind of like a chalk board and every pot or appliance leaves a mark. I find you have to wipe it quite a few times to get rid of them. I love how mine look but they do drive me crazy sometimes. So I would say don't leave them unhoned if your a total perfectionist.

  22. P.S. the Rug is great, so cheery!

  23. I am not sure if honed...we saw two samples, one super smooth and cloudy (ours), one very rough and bumpy (unpolished looking)....I suppose the smooth is honed, and I suppose we have honed. (See a close up of the counters on my giveaway post...you can see the cloudy 'pattern')

I grease these bad boys up ALL THE TIME! (Every few months probably)

When a pyrex dish dropped off the shelves (I know, sucked)...it left gouges in the slate...but I oiled it up and the gouges faded to the same dark grey and are pretty unnoticeable...same with all the smaller scratches...

just use a tsp of veg oil on a paper towel and rub it in like crazy! No residue...shiny goodness!

BTW I noticed that if you use a brand new anti-bacterial sponge on them, it leaves marks, you see every swipe mark...

I think the cleaning lady used my bathroom cleaner on them last week and I have wipe marks all over (I was trying out a cleaning lady someone had referred, but this one was a NO GO!) I will oil them up and it should come clean again! We don't use chemicals, ONLY palmolive!

SHORT STORY: GO FOR IT! use a few drops for a big area, and add a drop here and there ...its addictive...and not messy!

  24. I think I am going to oil them RIGHT NOW...

  25. ha, ha. Thanks for the info!

  26. You can't beat thrift stores but you never know what you're going to find at auctions, etc so I'llkeep an eye out for them. I'm tempted to go to Christie - we went in May and weren't terribly impressed but I have this theory that the prices are higher in the spring than the fall because it's the beginning of tourist season and they have lots of stock, yada yada but it's all speculation, really. I have nothing to base any of that on! If the weather's good - we'll probably go. Let me know if you decide to go and I'll do the same!
    :)
