Cedar Garage Door

This is happening in our backyard right now!

- Existing aluminum garage door
- Plywood panels
- Tight-knot cedar boards screwed to the plywood, every fourth board is ripped by 3/4 inch to fit the panel
- 300 screws in the panels, 90 screws in the back of the door
- Back of garage door predrilled, then wood panel screwed to the door from reverse side

Try not to get too excited!!!

  2. Hi Helen!

They are having a garage door service guy come by tomorrow to wind the spring or unwind the spring or something to do with, I dunno actually ...I just know a special tool is required and the spring could kill you if you take a crowbar to it. Not that I was planning to, you see.

We were going to buy a new plywood door and clad it with cedar, when my contractor worked this out...so I think it's cool. He mentioned something about the motor. I will let you know if we end up having to change the guts of the door. Right now I am not sure if there is more to it!! I just got so excited by how pretty!

I am not planning on clear coating it. I could be talked into it I suppose. The earth inc (lightbox) side hasn't weathered much at all the last three years, it still hold some cedar color. I like how it looks.

  4. So did you keep your existing garage door and just apply cedar to it? How did that work out? Does it open and close ok? Not too thick. Very curious...I love the concept.

  5. Ha! This is so great. The spring on my garage door broke and popped last month. Garage guy came out and of course I pumped him for information because on my list is to add some cladding to my ugly door (you and I live in parallel universes Shannon). Anyhoo, I think it's the spring that is the workhorse and not the motor so hopefully that's all that needs replacing to account for the additional weight. He also said it's normal to need to replace them every ten years or so. I just love the way this looks and I agree with not sealing it. Cedar is beautiful left to its own devices.
