Storage room counter installed
The countertop is done!
The junk in this room used to be piled in a jumbled mess. We cleared it out and hired Kerry's dad to install a maple plywood countertop (cost: $700 for materials and labour). Then I hung up a canvas curtain to hide the junk (cost $23 for canvas and $4 for velcro).
As an added bonus, we 'borrowed' my parents elliptical machine. (I've used it at least 10 times in the last three weeks - love having it here!).
There is one last round of organization that needs to take place. The area above the washer dryer will be fitted with shelves and bars to hold cleaning supplies and hang clothing. (We are doing this ourselves).
I'd love to hear what you think!?
ps. From time-to-time, I've regretted that we didn't divide this room into two: one for storage, and one for pretty laundry. Now, the room FINALLY feels 'on purpose'...

I love it, love it, love it. Room to organize your things is so great. I also like your sliding door - thinking of doing that over our front hall closet...
ReplyDeleteIt must be fantastic to have such a long countertop to work on! We have something similar planned for our laundry room but that it at the bottom of the "to-do" list. And in our house it would constantly be buried in outdoor gear and laundry....
ReplyDeleteCrouching tiger hidden dragon! :-) I really like the long countertop. Adding a drying rail is very very practical. We also use it to hang those that shouldn't be tumble-dried. If you have room, I'd suggest adding a couple of Ikea Adel cabinets to hide away laundry products. I'd probably add a thin rail in place of the velcro just so the curtain can be slided open easily.
ReplyDeleteMichelle - I was squinting and looking at the movie posters too! I have vintage The Undefeated (Japanese version - 1968 John Wayne movie), Cool Hand Luke, and The Band Wagon (1950's musical). But I digress...
ReplyDeleteI think having it one space is fine. It's not the HGTV fancy schmancy laundry room but then from what I understand, you don't have the square footage or the layout to do that. Practicality and usefulness rule the day in my book.
Looks great!
What a difference! Looks amazingly organized :)
ReplyDeleteDude. I'm so jealous of you're whole basement.
ReplyDeleteyour. duh.
ReplyDeleteI woke up to a broken washing machine this morning, and I'm thinking about getting LG as well. Have you been happy with them? I'm going to go for the steam option, yay! You gotta find something to be excited about when you're spending two grand on appliances. ;)
ReplyDeleteI don't often use them, to be entirely honest!
ReplyDeleteMy husband washes and dries all the laundry Sunday evenings...Monday morning he brings it up to the master bedroom...I dump it on the bed, fold it, and put it all away!
We've had this routine for over three years now!
Love it! A super functional space. And I love how organized it is...with labels and everything! Perfectly perfect!
ReplyDeleteDoesn't organization just make you feel good especially when you have the befores we had (mine was very similar)...It looks great!
ReplyDeleteI think it looks awesome! And it's so functional to have such a large counter top area. :)
ReplyDeleteAmazing! Love to see organized spaces like this! (organizing 'porn' for me!)
ReplyDeleteLove it! Especially the plywood countertop. Is there a seam somewhere or is it just one big long piece? For a city house, you actually have a fantastic amount of storage here.
ReplyDeleteThere is a seam, in the middle, at the 8 foot mark ...
ReplyDeleteThe craftsmanship is gorgeous! Mr Hale did an outstanding job...it's so professional!
Wow, I dream of organisation like this! Awesome job!
ReplyDeleteOh I would looooove to have storage like this. You're so organized. It's awesome and inspiring ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm drooling over all that storage! Looks awesome and I love the canvas skirt!
ReplyDeletegreat change! we have our old kitchen counter sitting in the garage, waiting for us to buy lower cabinets to put in our "laundry room" aka cinderblock cave
ReplyDeleteThis looks so perfect. I officially want to completely overhaul my horrifying mess of a basement now.
ReplyDeleteI am truly envious! A job well done!
ReplyDeleteI've seemed to grasp the whole organisation thing, I live my life in disordered chaos.
