Basement Underpin: Week 14 Wrap Up

This is what dark shiny concrete floors look like.  It was an experiment...not sure if I LOVE it...its GORGEOUS, but darker than expected (if I did it all over again, I would have selected one bag smoke, not two bags smoke)...and the texture is much rougher than expected...so until I can get down there and experience them, I will reserve my final judgment...the sealant/top coat is pretty awesome...but I wonder if bare feet will dull it down, you know?  Tough to say!  Its definitely NOT your  average basement concrete floor (FYI...we installed radiant heating)

The floors took longer than anticipated.  The contractor dropped off a large industrial fan to help dry them out and suck out the fumes.  Thankfully, there isn't any lingering odor upstairs.

Next week will be busy: stairs, trim, if lucky we will get to painting...
Now that the floors are done we can get the washer installed...and we need to take delivery of the couch too!

Our original deadline was June 4.  We are not going to be finished in time.  New estimate is mid June.  We don't really care at this point...as long as they show up everyday and work keeps progressing.

  1. I think it looks really nice. it might show all the dust/dirt though. In regards to keeping the finish glossy there is a product that we have used in the past that we were quite happy with. Zep Wet Look Floor Finish. You can by it from Home Depot and we applied it using a swiffer. You can add 1 to 3 coats and redo when it wears off (every 6 months or so). We used it on our past 2 lofts one with terrazzo floor and one with concrete (not properly sealed). Good luck on the rest of your reno. Can't wait to see the finished photos.

  2. Thanks Maggie! They just laid heavy paper over the floor, which means I won't see it again until the big reveal!

I think you are right, its going to be a dust magnet! I will have to keep a stash a swifter cloths close by.

The texture is almost like rubber. Yet it still has all the flaws and bumps and dimples of concrete... its cool....but dark!
