Still undecorated

The basement renovation wrapped up last August, and we STILL haven't made the space 'all it can be'...I have a ton of beefs with the space: everything feels pushed out toward the perimeter of the room (a coffee table might help); those wagner-esk beige and teak vintage chairs are still out of place to me; and the bare walls need to be addressed...
I couldn't even find some interesting vignettes to capture (maybe because I am not inspired by the room? or maybe because they just aren't there)

What changes would you make?  Where would you start? Art or coffee table or new chairs*?  We are now so used to the room as is, that we stopped seeing the ugly...and we stopped trying to make it gorgeous.

* FYI: The media console my husband wants is UGLY and has some sort of anti vibration technology or something...so I am stuck there too!

ps. I still want to do this ...we haven't made it to a DIY store to get the materials.

  1. Shannon - your home is so beautiful! I love the stairs & the desk underneath. I also think those teak/beige chairs are gorgeous although I hear you about the out of place issue.
I know those foam floor mats are great for kids but how about getting rid of them and getting another beige/sisal/matching carpet for that area or leave it empty? Or maybe have a look at those FLOR carpet tiles. My eyes just go directly to the kid zone.
Have you thought about moving the kid zone to the left side of that post where the chair is (in your first photo). That might break up the 'everything is on the perimeter' feel.
How about getting something like this (http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/30116080) for all the electronic components under the tv?
Do the tall speakers need to be right beside the tv on the floor? Can they be moved to corners?

p.s. Congrats on the garage sale!

  2. JORDANA YOU ARE A BRILLIANT LADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The speakers I can't touch...unfortunately...nor the stereo stuff...he isn't completely satisfied with his sound set up yet, so that's another reason why we are on hold...could be more components coming in, or some going out!

  3. Ha ha - thanks Shannon. Just offering my suggestions since you asked for it.
Thought of something else - since you have to keep all those electronic things - how about painting the tv/electronic wall black (or even the lower half?). I know it would make the space darker but you have great lighting down there and if you did that then all the black electronics would be camouflaged. And either get a black stand (or paint the one you have black) that is husband-approved.

  6. Your topic interest me while I was browsing the internet for Commercial carpet ideas. Anyway,
you have an organised place you have here. I bet you can think straight in a place like this. However, even though it's spic and span, I think you should try to find standard open wall shelves of any size at a home improvement center for an inexpensive storage solution for books and decorative objects. A structured wall unit or entertainment center can house books and electronic equipment and provides space for decorative displays. If you're going to stay in your home for a while, you might want to invest in custom-made shelves or cabinets.
